How to Test AI Contract Review With Amendments

A buyer test for checking clause evidence, changed terms and post-signature handoffs before trusting an AI contract review result.

On this page
  1. Choose the question
  2. Build the case set
  3. Inspect the evidence
  4. Test the handoff
  5. Decide the scope

A contract review demo can find a renewal date in seconds. That result is much less useful if the date was superseded by an amendment, the notice period sits in another document, or no one owns the follow-up task.

Test the decision your team needs to make, not the number of clauses the product can highlight. The method below uses a small, reviewed set of agreements and asks whether a person can trace, correct and act on the answer. It is an evaluation worksheet, not a way to delegate legal interpretation to software.

1. Choose one contract question and its owner

Start with a question such as “Which notice date must we act on for this supplier renewal?” or “What price adjustment applies to the next order?” Identify the business owner and the reviewer who decides what the contract means. A searchable repository, clause extraction and obligation management are different tasks; mark which of them the trial includes.

Use contracts your organisation is permitted to share in the trial. Keep the original, all relevant schedules and amendments together. If a document is missing, record that gap as part of the test rather than silently substituting a clean example. Our contract intelligence guide maps the broader product categories; this article tests one answer in depth.

2. Build a small case set that changes the answer

Ask a knowledgeable reviewer to prepare the expected answer and source passages before the vendor sees the cases. Include an ordinary agreement, an amendment that changes a commercial term, a schedule that adds a condition, and a case with an unresolved ambiguity. The target is a representative test of your documents, not a claim of universal accuracy.

Illustrative contract review cases
CaseWhat to ask the productWhat a reviewer needs to see
Original agreementFind the renewal date and notice rule. The exact clauses, parties, dates and any condition attached to notice.
Amended termIdentify the currently applicable price or renewal term. The original and amendment passages, with a clear explanation of which source changed the answer.
Schedule or annexFind an obligation that depends on a service level or delivery event. The linked schedule, trigger, owner and missing operational data.
Ambiguous wordingState the answer when two provisions appear to conflict.A flagged uncertainty and a path to human review, not a fabricated definitive answer.

Do not grade a product on a single polished example. Record which document formats, languages, scans and version patterns were actually tested. A correct result on one template does not establish performance on the rest of your contract set.

3. Inspect the evidence behind every answer

For each answer, ask the product to show the cited passage and document version. Check dates, entities, definitions, exceptions and cross-references. Have a reviewer correct one deliberately wrong extraction and inspect whether the correction is retained and visible in later work.

The NIST AI Risk Management Framework core ↗ emphasises evaluation in context, documented limitations and human oversight. For this buyer test, that means recording both an answer and the quality of its supporting evidence. A plausible summary without a verifiable source should remain open.

  • Correct and traceable: the answer is supported by the controlling document set.
  • Correct but untraceable: the answer may be useful, but a reviewer cannot verify how it was reached.
  • Open: the evidence is missing or the wording needs specialist interpretation.
  • Incorrect: the product used a superseded term, omitted a condition or confused parties.

4. Test what happens after the clause is found

If the workflow promises obligation or renewal management, ask it to create a dated task for the correct owner and show what happens if the owner changes. Trace the task back to the agreement and the reviewer’s decision. Do not count a dashboard alert as a completed commercial action.

The UK government’s contract management principles ↗ emphasise understood contracts, clear accountability and appropriate handover. They are public-sector guidance; the same questions about owner, record and follow-through are useful when a private buyer evaluates software.

5. Record what the product can support today

Summarise results by question type, document pattern and required human correction. Note any configuration, data preparation or integration needed to make the workflow work. A useful outcome may be faster retrieval with mandatory specialist review; it does not have to be automated contract interpretation.

Keep unresolved legal or commercial questions with the responsible team. If the vendor also claims supplier communication or purchasing actions, evaluate those permissions separately with our AI agent approval worksheet.
